The James Irvine Foundation recently announced that it has awarded $3.8 million in grants to twelve arts institutions in California’s Central Valley, as part of its Arts Regional Initiative. The recipients include three orchestras—the Fresno Philharmonic ($300,000), Sacramento Philharmonic ($325,000), and Stockton Symphony ($275,000)—as well as museums, performing arts centers, and opera, ballet, and theater companies. The Irvine Foundation said the twelve organizations were selected for their efforts to broaden and diversify their audiences and for strengthening their financial sustainability. “The Central Valley has been hit harder than most California regions by the recession, so it is more important than ever that we emphasize our commitment to these regional arts organizations as they explore new ways of achieving financial sustainability and attracting culturally diverse audiences” said Irvine Foundation President and CEO Jim Canales.
