During its 2009-10 season at Maryland’s Music Center at Strathmore, the National Philharmonic will perform twelve programs beginning with its season-opening all-Beethoven concert of the Symphony No. 1, Choral Fantasy, and Piano Concerto No. 2, with pianist Misha Dichter and vocal soloists. The orchestra will perform two works by the late Washington composer and violinist Andreas Makris, Allelulia and Symphony for Soprano and Strings; Carmen in concert, with Kendall Gladen in the title role; and there will be a 200th-anniversary concert keyed to both Haydn and Mendelssohn, featuring Haydn’s “Lord Nelson” Mass and Mendelssohn’s choral Symphony No. 2 (“Hymn of Praise”). Soloists scheduled to perform with the orchestra include cellist Zuill Bailey, pianist Leon Fleisher, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, violinist Elena Urioste, and soprano Arianna Zukerman. The orchestra will continue its string and choral education programs for second- through fifth-grade public school students in Montgomery County.
