In Sunday’s (3/22) Miami Herald, Rebecca Dellagloria reports, “An agreement with the New World Symphony to build a 520-space parking garage designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry gained preliminary city commission approval Wednesday. But plans to construct a Gehry-designed park would be scrapped in order to make up a roughly $1.8 million funding shortfall for the garage, if the item gets final approval. The commission is expected to take a final vote on the issue next month. The garage will now cost $16.8 million to construct, not $15.2 million, as previously agreed. … The hot-button issue was sacrificing Gehry’s designs for the two-acre park in order to save the garage. … The commission voted 5-2 to fund the garage’s funding shortfall with money set aside for the park. Gehry’s park design would cost the city $4.6 million—about $3 million more than it now plans to pay.”
