On December 5, “Litanies,” a 25-minute piece for cello and orchestra, won the 2023 Grawemeyer Prize for Music Composition. Written by British composer Julian Anderson, the score evokes the fire that destroyed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris as well as the death of composer and conductor Oliver Knussen, according to the New York Times (login may be required). The $100,000 Grawemeyer Prize is administered by the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
