California’s Long Beach Symphony Orchestra has published Music Looks Forward: The Long Beach Symphony Orchestra 1934-2009, commemorating the orchestra’s 75th anniversary. Written by Renee Simon and Michael Stugrin, the book has 132 pages of text and includes 240 photographs; the inside front and back covers feature a collage of 32 concert programs from the orchestra’s 75 seasons, and individual chapters cover the orchestra’s six music directors: Robert Resta, Lauris Jones, Alberto Bolet, Murry Sidlin, JoAnn Falletta, and Enrique Arturo Diemecke. Among the LBSO initiatives discussed in the book are the 1995 world premiere of Chinary Ung’s Antiphonal Spires, celebrating Long Beach’s Cambodian community; and the 2005 premiere of the multimedia work Dos Visiones, by composers Ana Lara and Robert Maggio, highlighting musical bridges between North and South America.
