In Wednesday’s (2/16) Calgary Herald (Alberta, Canada), Bob Clark writes, “Contrary to conventional concert-hall wisdom, classical music, young children and a canine do mix. The unique juxtaposition took place Monday, when the Calgary Philharmonic launched a new program, Musical Camps for Kids, at CUPS One World Child Development Centre in downtown Calgary. The event featured flutist Sara Hahn and bassoonist Michael Hope performing a handful of old and new duets. The concert included the premiere of a two-minute piece entitled Missy the Dog. And Missy, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel who can detect the onset of seizures in her owner, was in attendance along with a generally attentive audience ranging in age from two to five. … According to Ellen Bruce, CPO manager of education and outreach, the Musical Camps for Kids initiative arose from a pilot project of eight short concerts given by different CPO small ensembles last summer at the Eau Claire YMCA. The response and feedback to the series of classical performances at Eau Claire was such that the orchestra moved forward in securing the support of other community non-profits and expanded the program to other venues, such as the One World facility.”
