The Philadelphia Orchestra has announced details of its 2011-12 season, which will be Charles Dutoit’s last as Chief Conductor before Yannick Nézet-Séguin begins his tenure as Music Director in 2012-13. Beginning in the 2012-13 season, Dutoit will be given the title of the orchestra’s Conductor Laureate. Among the 2011-12 season’s highlights are an opening-night concert featuring soprano Dawn Upshaw performing favorites from the American Songbook; a concert performance of Richard Strauss’s one-act opera Elektra, with soprano Eva Johansson; and pianist Maurizio Pollini performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on a program also featuring Ravel’s complete Daphnis and Chloé, with the Philadelphia Singers Chorale. Nézet-Séguin will lead three programs as Music Director Designate, to include Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem, with soprano Dorothea Röschmann, baritone Matthias Goerne, and the Westminster Symphonic Choir; Jennifer Higdon’s Concerto for Orchestra; and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, which Nézet-Séguin will conduct from the keyboard. During the season the orchestra will also perform the complete cycle of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, with the first through fourth concertos led by Nicholas McGegan, and the sixth to be performed as part of a chamber program at Perelman Theater to be announced at a later date. Among the guest conductors scheduled during the season are Vladimir Jurowski, Christoph Eschenbach, Marin Alsop, David Zinman, Herbert Blomstedt, Rafeael Frühbeck de Burgos, James Gaffigan, Gianandrea Noseda, James Conlon, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Gilbert Varga, Jaap van Zweden, Simon Rattle, Robin Ticciati, and Nicola Luisotti.
