The Phoenix Symphony Association and its musicians have announced a joint agreement that incorporates financial sacrifices for musicians as well as cost savings by orchestra administrators. Under the terms of the agreement, orchestra musicians have waived a contractually obligated salary increase scheduled for next season, which would have represented a restoration of salary levels of two years ago when musicians agreed to pay cuts of 19 percent. The orchestra’s administration agreed to cost savings to be implemented through a restructuring plan, and both sides agreed to take further steps that will result in a more stable organization. “We commend the Phoenix Symphony management for their open and honest approach to our shared challenges,” said Players’ Committee Chairman Chuck Berginc in a statement. “These tough economic times call for flexibility and resilience in support of a common purpose, which is to continue to create beautiful music that benefits our community.” Phoenix Symphony Interim President and CEO Jim Ward said, “I am proud of the hard work that brought us here and I am truly appreciative of the leadership and integrity demonstrated by our musicians throughout our discussions as well as their ability to put the interest of our community foremost as our shared priority.”
