Thursday (3/31) on the WNEP news channel 16 website (Moosic, Pennsylvania), Julie Sidoni writes, “Classical music fans are in for a treat in the Northern Tier. A new symphony orchestra is about to give its first concert. The Northern Tier Symphony Orchestra is currently in rehearsals. ‘We were surprised by the number of people who play instruments here, and play very well. They’re just hidden. They had nowhere to play,’ said Robert Helmacy, the group’s director and conductor. Helmacy formed the group about six months ago. He said the orchestra is made up of some talented musicians from all over Pennsylvania and New York who have taught and performed all over the world. ‘The players are coming from everywhere, and they’re all ages. The youngest is a sophomore in high school; the oldest is an 82-year-old string bass player,’ said Helmacy. The Northern Tier Symphony Orchestra’s Inaugural Concert is Saturday, April 9th at 8 p.m. The concert will be held at Tunkhannock Middle School in Wyoming County.”
