In Monday’s (4/5) Desert Sun (Palm Springs, California), Bruce Fessier writes, “A near-capacity audience at the McCallum Theatre heard six concerti by teen and pre-teen pianists from around the world Sunday as part of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition finale. … Tristan Teo, 13 of Vancouver, British Columbia, was the big winner of the eight-day competition, held mostly at the Indian Wells Theater at Cal State San Bernardino, Palm Desert. He won first place in both the solo and concerto intermediate competitions, earning $3,000 for each contest and performances with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra in Washington and the Gold Coast Symphony in Florida. The junior concerto competition was won by Zitong Wang, 12, of Beijing, who earned $3,000 and a performance with the Yakima orchestra. The junior solo contest was won by Alex Chien, 12, of San Jose, who earned $3,000 and a recital in Snowmass Village, Colo. The biannual competition is distinguished from most piano competitions by having its own composer in residence, John Bayless.”
