In Wednesday’s (4/1) Miami Herald, Daniel Chang writes, “More Broadway shows, more private donations, lower administrative costs—and a first-time request for $543,000 from Miami-Dade to pay for facility maintenance—are among the highlights of the 2009-10 budget for the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The budget, presented at a Tuesday meeting of the independent Performing Arts Center Trust, which manages the publicly owned center, projects the center will generate revenues of $36 million—$4.7 million more than this season—on the strength of additional Broadway shows. John Burnett, chief financial officer, said the Arsht Center plans to present 72 Broadway performances next season, compared to 40 this season. That increase should lead to a $4.1 million bump in revenues, Burnett said. … Arsht Center administrators also will ask the county for $543,000 to repair wear and tear on the facility, replace technologically outdated equipment such as lighting boards, and bring the buildings up to standards for fire safety and accessibility.” Those funds would be in addition to the $7.5 million annual subsidy the center already receives from Miami-Dade. Orchestras who regularly perform at the Arsht Center include The Cleveland Orchestra, Miami Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony.
