Alan Gilbert will lead the New York Philharmonic at the inaugural concert of the Caramoor Fall Festival on October 2, in Katonah, New York. Caramoor has held a summer festival for 64 years, but these are the first concerts to take place there in the fall. The Philharmonic’s all-Beethoven concert at Caramoor’s Venetian Theatre will feature Symphony No. 7 and Piano Concerto No. 4, with Emanuel Ax as soloist. Michael Barrett, Caramoor’s general director, characterized the Philharmonic’s debut at Caramoor as “welcome and long overdue” and said he was particularly honored that Gilbert had scheduled this performance as one of the earliest events in his tenure as the Philharmonic’s new music director. Other events during the fall festival include soprano Sumi Jo in recital and jazz pianist/drummer Chick Corea in a solo concert. The 2009 Caramoor International Music Festival takes place this summer from June 27 to August 5, with offerings to include Donizetti and Rossini operas, chamber music, Béla Fleck’s “Africa Project,” and works by Prokofiev, Haydn, Grieg, Stravinsky, Schubert, and Mozart, featuring the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, in its 30th year of residence at Caramoor.
