The Kansas City Symphony announced that it has received an anonymous challenge matching grant of $300,000. To meet the challenge for the campaign, called “Great Music for a Great City,” the orchestra must raise $300,000 by June 30, the end of its fiscal year. This is the fifth springtime matching campaign for the Kansas City Symphony; its most recent campaign raised $370,000 in 2010. “This is an extraordinary opportunity for the Kansas City Symphony,” said Executive Director Frank Byrne in a statement. The orchestra will inaugurate its new home, the Helzberg Concert Hall at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, in September 2011, with a program of Stravinsky, Beethoven, and Respighi, plus a world premiere commission by Chen Yi, led by Music Director Michael Stern.
