New York radio station WQXR has announced that it will live-stream its broadcasts of the Spring for Music orchestra concerts at Carnegie Hall from May 6 to 13 using 3D technology. Working with Arup—a consulting, design, and engineering firm whose previous projects include the Sydney Opera House and the Singapore Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010—the station will add a special 3D microphone to the microphones it normally uses for broadcasts and audio webcasts. The microphone is meant to give listeners an audio experience of hearing the concert as though sitting in the middle of the orchestra section of the hall. The 3D stream at the WQXR website can be heard by listeners using headphones. Spring for Music is a showcase of concerts at Carnegie Hall by seven North American orchestras: the Albany, Dallas, Montreal, Oregon, and Toledo Symphony Orchestras, and the Orpheus and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestras.
