Monday (6/20) The Classical Review, Michael Quinn writes, “The Philadelphia-based Orchestra 2001 has recorded four orchestral works by American composers from the past decade alongside Romeo Cascarino’s Blades of Grass (a 1945 setting of Carl Sandburg’s poem Glass) for Innova Recordings. The disc takes its title from Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Higdon’s ‘brilliant little overture’ To the Point, one of two works dating from 2004, the other being Andrew Rudin’s violin concerto Canto di Ritorno (with soloist Maria Bachmann). Other featured works include Gunther Schuller’s Concerto da Camera (2002) and Jay Reise’s The River Within (2008), also a violin concerto, with Diane Monroe the soloist. The orchestra’s founder and artistic director James Freeman conducts all of the works, except for Concerto da Camera, which has the composer on the podium. Founded in 1988, Orchestra 2001 has previously recorded with
CRI, Albany and Bridge Records. This is its tenth release, and its first for Innova.”
