The International Contemporary Ensemble has announced that its 2011-12 season will include performances in its home cities of New York and Chicago, plus visits to Cologne, Reykjavik, Philadelphia, Boston, Oberlin, Fullerton (Cal.), and Reston (Va.). The fall season will kick off with guest conductor Steven Shick leading the U.S. premiere of James Dillon’s Nine Rivers, a nine-part work for percussion, voice, electronics, video, strings and brass, spread over three nights on September 14, 16, and 17; the work is co-produced by Works & Process at the Guggenheim and also will feature the chamber choir The Crossing, percussion ensemble red fish blue fish, and percussionist/multimedia artist Ross Karre. Among other season highlights are a residency at New York’s Baryshnikov Arts Center with six emerging composers from the ensemble’s 2012 ICElab program; performances of Steve Reich’s Different Trains at Symphony Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland; music of Iannis Xenakis and David Lang at Oberlin College; a program of works by Kaija Saariaho at Boston’s Gardner Museum; a DVD/CD release of works by Xenakis; and performances at the California State University at Fullerton’s New Music Festival and at the Musik Triennale Köln in Germany. International Contemporary Ensemble, founded in 2001, features a flexible roster of 33 instrumentalists that focuses on presenting new works; its Listening Room educational initiative targets public schools whose music programs have been cut during the economic downturn.
