Canada’s Honens International Piano Competition has launched Honens Sessions Live, a new live-performance series of live solo and collaborative recordings by Honens laureates for digital download only. The first digital download in the new series will feature Gilles Vonsattel, a laureate of the 2009 Honens Competition, performing with members of Trio élan (violinist Frank Huang, cellist Nicolas Altstaedt) in Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat (WoO 38), Brahms’s Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor (Op. 101), and Ravel’s Piano Trio in A minor. In addition to the digital download series launch, Honens is releasing four new CDs to coincide with the birthday of Andrew Raeburn, Honens’s artistic director from 1993 to 2004, who died last summer at age 77. Those recordings feature a second Vonsattel CD of works by Ravel, Debussy, Holliger, Honegger, and Ravel, as well as CDs by laureates Minsoo Sohn (2006), Georgy Tchaidze (2009), and Evgeny Starodubtsev (2009).
