The Florence Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina will perform its first concert in the new Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center on September 12, with works to include Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, and a commissioned work by Barbara Gallagher. The 61,000-square-foot performing arts center in downtown Florence was designed by architect Malcolm Holzman with acoustics by Akustiks and can seat 800 in the main hall; it features a movable concert shell that can create spaces of different sizes. The building also has a 100-seat black-box theater and will house offices for FMU faculty as well as the Florence Symphony, the Masterworks Choir, and the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation.
