In Sunday’s (9/25) Cincinnati Enquirer, Janelle Gelfand writes, “ ‘I’m really kind of a journeyman composer,’ said Philip Glass. ‘I’m out working and playing. So I bring a slightly different perspective to the music-writing business than maybe other people do.’ That may be an understatement for the maverick American composer, one of the most influential and original composers of our time. As he participates in a yearlong, worldwide celebration of his 75th birthday on Jan. 31, Glass notes that, lately, he has been rediscovering the music of his youth. … This week, Glass, who is also a pianist, will be traveling to Cincinnati, where this season, as one of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s three creative directors, he will oversee his own concert series, participate in community events, deliver preconcert lectures, be inducted in the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and hear two of his major works performed by the symphony. … On Friday and Saturday, CSO timpanists Patrick Schleker and Richard Jensen will perform the Cincinnati Symphony premiere of his Concerto Fantasy for two Timpanists and Orchestra. In March, Glass will be back in town for the world premiere of his Cello Concerto No. 2, ‘Naqoyqatsi,’ performed by Matt Haimovitz.”
