The Chicago Sinfonietta’s “Under the Night Sky” program on November 5 will feature the world premiere of video created by astronomer and visual artist José Francisco Salgado. The video will be projected on a giant screen over the orchestra during its performance of the second and third suites from Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé Suites 1 and 2, with the video taking the place of the customary danced ballet. Salgado’s visuals have been used in prior Sinfonietta concerts, including those featuring Holst’s The Planets and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The “Under the Night Sky” program, described as “examining our place in the cosmos,” also includes excerpts from Michael Gandolfi’s fifteen-movement work The Garden of Cosmic Speculation, Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra, and Dvorák’s “Song to the Moon” from Rusalka.
