In Sunday’s (11/13) El Paso Times (Texas), Doug Pullen writes, “At 41, Yale-educated conductor Lawrence Loh said he’s ready for ‘the next step.’ He’s the third of six candidates for the El Paso Symphony Orchestra’s conductor and music director position and will lead the orchestra in concerts at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Plaza Theatre. Loh, resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, said it’s not unusual for someone in his position to want to go to the next level, which, in this case, is leading an orchestra. … He’s also music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, based in the Poconos Mountains. ‘That’s definitely a strong priority,’ he said of the Poconos gig, ‘but it’s a smaller season than El Paso. El Paso is a step up in the size of the orchestra. For me, there are many things that are appealing about it.’ One of them is the orchestra’s El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestras organization. Loh is music director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra and held a similar post with the Denver Young Artists Orchestra. … His El Paso concerts will close with Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, which the El Paso Symphony Orchestra hasn’t performed since 2006.”
