The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has announced details of its two-week festival of South American music, ¡Música Ardiente! Beginning on May 27, Miguel Harth-Bedoya will lead the orchestra, along with guest dancers and soloists, in three programs: “Caminos del Inka,” exploring musical traditions of the Inca Trail, which incorporates visuals of Machu Picchu and other parts of Peru; Osvaldo Golijov’s Cello Concerto, Azul, with Yo-Yo Ma as soloist; and “Tangos, Fados, and Dance,” featuring vocalist Luciana Souza and the Rosa Collantes Dancers. The festival will also include free events such as tango demonstrations, salsa dancing, and performances by the Andean band Vientos Del Pueblo. The festival was inspired by Harth-Bedoya’s Caminos del Inka Project, premiered with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in 2007, which incorporates music from the Inca Empire and commissions new music from South America. Composers whose music will be performed at the festival in Atlanta include Gabriela Lena Frank, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Esteban Benzecry, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Alberto Ginastera, and Astor Piazzolla.
