In Monday’s (12/19) Pittsburgh Press, Dan Majors writes about an event that night at 3634 Penn Avenue, a local club, where a chamber-music event spotlighting the professional violinists, violists, and cellists of Classical Revolution Pittsburgh was set to take place. “Classical Revolution Pittsburgh is the local chapter of a bigger project that started in San Francisco with the goal of bringing classical music to the masses. Rather than having you get all gussied up and head over to the opulence of Heinz Hall, the musicians show up in smaller galleries, bars and coffee shops and perform the masterpieces from centuries ago. ‘They play just about everything,’ said Monk McAllister, the impresario and proprietor of the club. ‘I think they’re planning a Brahms clarinet piece, something by Franz Liszt, and a Prokofiev piece. … This is not a for-profit gallery,’ he said. ‘I just try to help out local musicians and artists by letting them use the space. … There are lots of talented people in areas of the arts in this town, and it just sort of happened. But, like most Pittsburghers, they all have two or three other jobs. I think the violinist also plays in an alternative rock band.’ … There will be refreshments on hand and there’s no cover. … When the concert is over, you can still catch the fourth quarter of the Steelers’ game.” The Pittsburgh Press is available online here http://www.post-gazette.com/trypress/, but all articles are behind a paywall.
