In Tuesday’s (3/6) Flint Journal (Michigan), Scott Atkinson writes, “Five finalists selected from twenty-seven contestants competed for the opportunity to perform with the Flint Symphony Orchestra and a $6,000 prize at the William C. Byrd Young Artist Competition at the Flint Institute of Music March 3. ‘The competition is internationally acclaimed, and competitors come from all over the world,’ Carol Hinterland, who chaired the competition, wrote in an email. The winner was violinist Joohye Lim, who performed the Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 by Beethoven. … Lim received her bachelor of music degree from Seoul National University in Korea and continued her studies for a master’s degree at the New England Conservatory of Music. She is currently studying toward an artist diploma in violin performance at the Yale School of Music. Mario Gotoh took second after performing the Concerto for Viola and Orchestra by Walton. Gotoh studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music and plans to complete a dual doctoral degree in violin and viola performance at Stony Brook University. She won $2,500 for taking second.”
