Sunday (3/18) on the Dallas Morning News online, Scott Cantrell writes, “Benjamin Britten’s powerful War Requiem, the first act of Wagner’s Die Walküre, Orff’s Carmina Burana and the North American premiere of Philip Glass’ Double Concerto for violin and cello will be among highlights of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s 2012-13 season. The season also will include a March 2013 European tour including Amsterdam and Eindhoven in the Netherlands, London, Vienna, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Hanover. Otherwise, this will be a season for belt-tightening. As previously announced, the DSO is cutting back the classical season from 21 to 16 programs, and pops from 12 to 9. This is part of a plan to reduce the orchestra’s deficits, which ran $8 million and $6.4 million in the last two seasons. … In his fifth season as music director, Jaap van Zweden will conduct 11 of the 16 programs. Principal pops conductor Marvin Hamlisch will conduct three of the pops programs. … Repertory for the European tour, heavy on Austro-German fare, includes the Korngold Violin Concerto (with violinist Hilary Hahn), the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier Suite and Steven Stucky’s Elegy.”
