In Wednesday’s (7/18) Post-Standard (Syracuse, New York), the publication’s editorial board writes, “At the beginning of the Symphony Syracuse pops concert Saturday at Fayetteville’s Beard Park, Vicki Feldman made a simple plea to the large, attentive audience: It’s time to let the Syracuse Symphony go. Feldman is a member of the former Syracuse Symphony Association, which used to raise about $70,000 a year for the symphony. She was talking about the legitimate bitterness and disappointment many in Central New York still harbor about the April 2011 bankruptcy of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. … The ‘lifeboat’ Symphony Syracuse, made up of former Syracuse Symphony musicians, has done outstanding work, performing more than 40 concerts in a variety of venues. But without a better financial plan and a clear mission and structure, it’s hard to envision this group hanging on for long. … A possible solution is emerging in a partnership between Jon Garland, who represents the musicians, and Bob Daino, president and CEO of WCNY and a former board member of the Syracuse Phil. As community columnist David Rubin reported Saturday, they envision a much smaller budget: $2 million a year vs. the 2010-2011 SSO budget of $7 million. … But the success of Symphony Syracuse shows a smaller group can present quality performances.”
