In Connecticut, the New Haven and Waterbury symphony orchestras have announced a new joint education initiative, the Alexion Toolkit for Interdisciplinary Learning. The toolkit will be provided during the 2012-13 school year to participating teachers at 25 elementary and middle schools served by the orchestras; included in the program is a prep guide for teachers with lessons plans that will be covered at a teacher-training workshop. The curriculum for the program focuses on a range of American performers and composers: Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, Marian Anderson, Thelonious Monk, Kevin Olusola, and Daniel Bernard Roumain. All teachers in the program are invited to a February 2013 workshop on hip-hop techniques presented by Roumain, a composer and violinist. The program is supported by the biopharmaceutical company Alexion, which is in the process of moving its headquarters to New Haven.
