In Tuesday’s (8/21) Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Texas), Scott Nishimura reports, “Arts organizers continued to press the Fort Worth City Council to maintain funding for the Arts Council of Fort Worth & Tarrant County, with several including Fort Worth Symphony music director Miguel Harth-Bedoya speaking during a hearing Tuesday on the 2013 budget. ‘I’m concerned for the future of the symphony and all arts institutions if these cuts are made,’ Harth-Bedoya told the council. The city’s proposed $583 million general fund budget would cut $266,564 from the Arts Council’s budget, leaving $799,691. The Arts Council uses the money to make grants, most recently to 43 organizations last year. Though a small amount of money compared to the bigger budget, Harth-Bedoya said in an interview, ‘it’s the principle. … Art makes better people. Period. It makes better citizens. And better citizens make better cities. … A little investment will pay off.’ ”
