The five boroughs of New York City will be the setting for the second annual Make Music Winter event on December 21, 2012, held on the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. The free, outdoor musical event is organized by Make Music New York, which also produces an annual one-day outdoor music event on June 21 throughout New York City. Make Music Winter 2012 will consist of twelve musical parades that include Peregrine, a new 45-minute electronic work by Phil Kline that starts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and moves to Fort Greene, Brooklyn; Recordare, by Japanese composer Hiroya Miura, with musicians to include two groups of brass musicians and Michael J. Smith—the carilloneur from Harlem’s St. Martin’s Episcopal Church—who together will play the “Dies Irae” from Berlioz’s Requiem; tag-team performances by amateur and professional string players of Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major throughout the G subway train line, conceived and produced by James Holt; and a new piece by So Percussion’s Jason Treuting and Josh Quillen for a chorus of pitched copper pipes, during which participants will receive performing instructions at various locations in Greenwich Village.
