In Wednesday’s (12/19) Courier-Press (Evansville, Indiana), Roger McBain writes, “Alfred Savia has signed a contract to lead the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra three more years. The new agreement will keep Savia on the podium as music director and conductor through the 2015-2016 season. In doing so, he will become the orchestra’s longest-serving music director, breaking the 26-year tenure of Minas Christian, who held the post from 1953 to 1979. When he first joined the orchestra, in 1989, Savia ‘could not have imagined a tenure of this length,’ he said. ‘It is only possible because of the incredible musicians of the orchestra, who keep playing better year after year.’ The 59-year-old conductor said he felt fortunate to work for an organization with ‘a huge breadth of constituencies, including our board and administrative staff, the youth orchestras, chorus and three volunteer organizations.’ He said he looks forward leading the orchestra three additional years, beginning with his 25th anniversary season, in 2013 into 2014. … Christopher Wolking, the president of the orchestra’s board of directors, called the organization ‘truly fortunate to have had (Savia) this long. A quality music director combined with our talented musicians has created a great artistic product of which we are all very proud.’ ”
