During the month of December, the New York Philharmonic has been offering free tickets to five concerts for relief workers and others affected by Hurricane Sandy. Tickets for the December 13, 14, 18, 19, and 20 concerts at Avery Fisher Hall are being distributed to offices of the Borough Presidents in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. At those concerts, musicians from orchestra are also speaking from the stage to encourage contributions through relief organizations including the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, the Brooklyn Recovery Fund, and Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. “The musicians of the New York Philharmonic feel a strong need to do something for those suffering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy,” said violinist Fiona Simon, chairperson of the orchestra committee. “We hope that in sharing our music we can help lift people’s spirits during this difficult time.” More information is available at nyphil.org/sandy.
