The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra has announced that its coming season will feature two commissioned works: a clarinet concerto by Lowell Liebermann, with soloist Jon Manassee, and a chamber piece by Dayton-based composer Jeff Olmsted. During the 2009-10 season, the DPO will spotlight music of the Romantic era, including Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2, and Franck’s Symphony in D minor, as well as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Jessica Hung, the DPO’s new concertmaster, will play a solo recital of Mozart, Bartók, and Strauss in the orchestra’s chamber music series. The DPO will expand its family series with four more concerts, to include a Halloween concert, Cirque de La Symphonie, and Fairy Tale Fantasia with Madcap Puppet Theatre. The orchestra’s SuperPops series will present jazz/cabaret singer Jane Monheit, pianist Leon Bates in a Gershwin-inspired program, and the band Rhythm in Shoes. Special events will include a Lincoln bicentennial celebration, music of ABBA, Handel’s Messiah, the annual New Year’s Eve concert, “A Night at Woodstock,” and Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers.
