For its 70th anniversary during the 2013-14 season, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut will perform nine Masterworks and six pops programs, with local partners and guest soloists to include violinist Sirena Huang, the Hartford Stage Company, the Hartford Chorale, and a drumline from the University of Connecticut. Music Director Carolyn Kuan will lead the season-opening October 11 program at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, featuring Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor and Saint-Saëns’s Symphony No. 3 (“Organ”), with soloist Edward Clark at the Bushnell’s Austin pipe organ. Sirena Huang will perform the Sibelius Violin Concerto on Hartford’s December “Greensleeves” program, and the Hartford Chorale will join the orchestra for Mozart’s Requiem in April. In January, the Hartford Stage Company and the orchestra will perform Darko Tresnjak’s new staging of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with Mendelssohn’s incidental music. For the final June program, the University of Connecticut Drumline will join the HSO for Ravel’s Bolero. In 2013-14, the Hartford Symphony will continue its El Sistema-style afterschool program, now in its second year, and launch its Musician Cares Project, which is supported by a grant from the Getty Foundation and the League of American Orchestras.
