Can El Sistema apply to Newark, New Jersey? The New Jersey Symphony is betting that it can, partnering with University Heights Charter School in Newark in a new program that puts violins in the hands of young students and offers instruction from orchestra members. Symphony’s Jennifer Melick recently visited the school—and got a surprise lesson in how to spell “violin.”

Also this week, members of the League’s Volunteer Council, which celebrates its 50th anniversary at the League’s National Conference, talk about why they support orchestras as volunteers, and Alex Ross comments on the underrepresentation of women composers today.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s online-only publication, updated with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
