MARK RUSSELL SMITH has been appointed artistic director of the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies, based in St. Paul, Minn. A longtime resident of the Twin Cities, he has served as artistic director of orchestral studies at the University of Minnesota School of Music since 2007, and as music director of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra (Davenport, Iowa) since 2008. Smith has also directed new-music projects at the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and from 1999 to 2009 was music director of the Richmond (Va.) Symphony. At GTCYS he will guide the organization’s artistic and educational vision and conduct the Symphony, its premier ensemble.
