In Tuesday’s (07/09) Vancouver Province (Canada), David Broatch reports, “The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO)…returns to Whistler Village and [its] spectacular outdoor Olympic Plaza…as part of the Whistler Presents Summer Concert Series. Selected quartets and quintets from the orchestra start things off with a series of shorter free concerts throughout the day on July 16 and 17…the full orchestra will be on the hill for two free 8 p.m. concerts on July 19 and July 20, and for a children’s-themed presentation on July 21. Each evening concert presents a different repertoire–‘Light Classics’ and ‘Masterworks’–and features VSO conductor Sean Newhouse and 2007 International Tchaikovsky gold medalist, violinist Mayuko Kamio. The family concert on Sunday [with a performance] of ‘Beethoven Lives Upstairs’ features children’s entertainers Classical Kids and showcases excerpts from many of the great composer’s most enduring works in a storyline that explores what might occur if an eccentric tenant who just happened to be … Beethoven … moved in upstairs. … Alan Gove, the VSO’s Vice President, Marketing & Sales, says, ‘There is nothing like hearing live classical music performed in such a stunning natural environment, and this year…the orchestra will be performing music by Stravinsky, Mendelssohn, Dvorák, Mozart and more.’ ”
