Among the orchestras recently announcing state arts grants are Arizona’s Tucson Symphony Orchestra and the Georgia and Albany symphony orchestras, both in Georgia. The Tucson Symphony Orchestra received $60,000 from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the full amount of state grant money available for the 2014 fiscal year. The commission said it bases its awards on fiscal ingenuity, broad participation from the state’s residents, and programs that reflect Arizona’s diversity. The Georgia Symphony Orchestra—based in Kennesaw, 28 miles northwest of Atlanta—has received a $25,000 grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts. The Albany Symphony Orchestra also received a $25,000 operating grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts, plus a $9,760 Arts Education Bonus Award. Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs received a $75,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to offset the effect of gentrification in the city’s downtown arts district. The grant—for artists who earn no more than $29,000 for individuals and $33,150 for two-person households—will allow artists to rent apartments in the arts district with a 50 percent federal subsidy.
