The Savannah Philharmonic, Longwood Symphony Orchestra, Gulf Coast Symphony, and Amarillo Symphony are among the orchestras announcing world premieres for the 2013-14 season. Georgia’s Savannah Philharmonic will open its season on September 21 with Artistic Director Peter Shannon leading the world premiere of a new violin concerto by Irish composer John Buckley, featuring soloist Gwendolyn Masin; also on the program at Savannah’s Lucas Theatre for the Arts will be Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Bernstein’s Candide Overture. In Massachusetts, the Longwood Symphony Orchestra—whose personnel are doctors and other healthcare professionals—will perform a new work by Boston-based composer Andrew List on the first of its four season programs, on October 5 at Boston’s Jordan Hall. That Longwood program will also feature Sibelius’s Symphony No. 7 and Brahms’s Violin Concerto, with soloist Miriam Fried. On April 5, 2014, the Gulf Coast Symphony in Mississippi will perform the world premiere of a Daniel Baldwin’s new trombone concerto, featuring Joe Alessi, principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic, as soloist. Music Director John Strickler will lead the concert at the Saenger Theatre in Biloxi, also featuring works by Dvorák, Shostakovich, Johann Strauss, Jr., and Verdi. On September 20, the Amarillo Symphony in Texas will open its first season under Jacomo Rafael Bairos, its new music director, with a commissioned fanfare by Paul Dooley. The program at Amarillo’s Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts—the first of seven programs during 2013-14—will also include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and Korngold’s Violin Concerto, with soloist Bella Hristova.
