The San Francisco Symphony has announced several musician appointments effective with the 2013-14 season, including JACOB NISSLY, principal percussion, and ALEX ORFALY, acting principal timpani.

As principal percussion, Jacob Nissly succeeds JACK VAN GEEM, who has retired. Nissly goes to San Francisco from the Cleveland Orchestra, where he held the principal percussion post. Prior to that Nissly served as principal percussion in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and he was a Fellow in the New World Symphony.

Alex Orfaly will serve as acting principal timpani this season while DAVID HERBERT is on a one-year leave of absence. Orfaly has played timpani in Sun Valley, Idaho, since 2005, and from 2006 to 2010 served as principal timpani of the Orquestra Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, Spain.
