Several artistic appointments have been announced by the Virginia Symphony for 2013-14: BENJAMIN ROUS, resident conductor; GABRIEL CAMPOS ZAMORA, principal clarinet; ADAM GANDOLFO, second trumpet; JEREMY GARNETT, third trumpet; and MICHAEL MIRAGLIOTTA, second trombone.

Benjamin Rous, who joined the orchestra in 2010 as associate conductor, will appear on every Virginia Symphony series in his new role as resident conductor, including Classics, POPS, PB&J Family Concerts, Young People’s Concerts, and at multiple outdoors programs. He will also conduct the orchestra in April 2014 on its first tour of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Rous is one of six conductors who participated in the Bruno Walter National Conducting Preview of the League of American Orchestras in March at the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in Florida.

Gabriel Compos Zamora, principal clarinet, is a native of San José, Costa Rica, and a recent graduate of the Colburn School in Los Angeles. In addition to winning concerto competitions at Aspen Music Festival and School, Music Academy of the West, and the National Repertory Orchestra, he has participated in the Spoleto USA and Tanglewood music festivals.

Adam Gandolfo, second trumpet, has freelanced in Western New York and in the Midwest, including performances with the Buffalo and Rochester philharmonic orchestras. A native of Brighton, Mich., he holds a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University.

Jeremy Garnett, third trumpet, has served as principal trumpet in the Fort Worth (Tex.) Sinfonietta, as a regular substitute with the Fort Worth Symphony, and in the Hong Kong Philharmonic, New World Symphony, and Texas’s Victoria and Plano symphony orchestras. Garnett is a graduate of Interlochen (Mich.) Arts Academy and studied at Boston Conservatory of Music and Texas Christian University.

Michael Miragliotta, second trombone, has served as principal trombone in Virginia’s Piedmont Symphony Orchestra; as featured soloist with the Massanutten (Va.) Brass Band; and as a member of the trombone quartet Mr. Jefferson’s Bones. He holds a Master of Music degree and a Performer Diploma from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from James Madison University in Harrison, Va.
