The Hartford Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut is in the midst of its “Bachtoberfest,” a new festival of music by Bach and music written for organ, October 4-12 throughout the Hartford area. The HSO is partnering with the Hartford Chapter of the American Guild of Organists for the festival, which includes free concerts and discussions as well as organ tours at numerous local churches and synagogues. “Bachtoberfest” began with organ tours of the Austin Organ Factory and United Methodist Church; also included are a choral singalong at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church in West Hartford and a free lunchtime concert that wraps in a discussion with HSO musicians, at the downtown branch of the Hartford Public Library. Music Director Carolyn Kuan will lead the opening concert of the HSO 2013-14 season—the orchestra’s 70th—with a program that includes Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor and Saint-Saëns’s Symphony No. 3, both featuring the Austin pipe organ in Mortensen Hall at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s home.
