“It’s not enough to be a talented musician these days. DePauw University in Greencastle [Indiana] wants its music students to know how to market themselves, reach out to diverse audiences and connect to a broader community,” writes Barb Berggoetz in Friday’s (10/11) Indianapolis Star. “A $15 million gift from alumni Judson and Joyce Green, announced today, will be used to transform the private university’s School of Music to better meet the needs of students entering a rapidly changing music industry. It establishes the 21st Century Musician Initiative, called 21CM. ‘You rarely see gifts of this size supporting arts and music,’ said DePauw President Brian W. Casey.… University officials say they’re on the cutting edge of how they teach music students—a step they hope will lead to making classical and other music more accessible to the general public.… Under the new initiative, [School of Music Dean Mark] McCoy said, the curriculum will offer training in marketing, business practices, Web designing and recording.… During a pilot phase from 2011 to 2013, the School of Music introduced aspects of the initiative. It sponsored a guest artist series, residencies for world-class chamber ensembles and international touring opportunities for university ensembles.”
