The Charleston Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina has announced it is partnering with the College of Charleston Department of Music for a new-music project called Magnetic South. The project encompasses two concerts this season spotlighting local composers and soloists, entitled “The Carolina Connection I & II.” Yiorgos Vassilandonakis, an assistant professor at the College of Charleston and Magnetic South co-founder, will lead the first concert on October 25 at the College of Charleston’s Simons Center. The program features music by Richard Moryl, John Kennedy, and Dick Maltz, all based in Charleston. Moryl is founder and director of both the Charles Ives Center for American Music and New England Contemporary Music Ensemble; Kennedy is resident conductor of Spoleto Festival USA; Maltz is a professor of music at the University of South Carolina. The October concert will be preceded by a discussion panel led by Edward Hart, chair of the College of Charleston Department of Music and Magnetic South co-founder. The second concert, in March, will feature music by Andrew McKenna Lee, Ayala Asherov, and Jon Schwabe. “We are proud to work with the College’s School of the Arts to help us reach a broader audience through contemporary music,” said Yuriy Bekker, the CSO’s concertmaster and acting artistic director.
