The Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra in Philadelphia has announced auditions for adult amateur musicians to participate in its Side-by-Side program, in which amateurs perform alongside BPCO musicians. Auditions will take place on November 4 through 7 at the orchestra’s offices on Greene Street in Philadelphia. Up to 40 amateur instrumentalists over the age of 23 will be accepted; music teachers from area schools are encouraged to audition, but full-time music students are not eligible to participate. The program entails regular rehearsals and will culminate on June 21, 2014—National Music Day—with a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, led by Jeri Lynne Johnson, BPCO’s founder and music director. The Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra was founded in 2007, with the goal of increasing diversity in classical music.
