CutTime Productions has announced a $30,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that will allow it to expand and professionalize its Detroit community-engagement initiatives. Founded in 2010 by Rick Robinson, a former longtime bassist in the Detroit Symphony, CutTime produces and hosts a variety of casual classical events in nontraditional venues such as neighborhood bars, clubs, and cafes, featuring local musicians. Similar to jam sessions, evenings generally include amplification and have a spoken-word component. The new grant is part of the Knight Arts Challenge, a community-wide contest that funds ideas for enriching Detroit through the arts.
