“Royal Swedish Opera announced today that Alan Gilbert will assume the post as the company’s music director beginning in the spring of 2021,” reads an unsigned Thursday (1/16) Opera News article. “For eight years, Gilbert served as music director of the New York Philharmonic, and, prior to that, he held the podium from 2000 through 2008 as the chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, where he maintains the title of conductor laureate. He currently serves as chief conductor of Hamburg’s NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, and intends to continue in that role during his tenure at Royal Swedish Opera. Gilbert also holds the post of principal guest conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony.… Dutch conductor Lawrence Renes most recently served as [Royal Swedish Opera’s] chief conductor from 2012 through 2017. Gilbert made his Royal Swedish Opera debut in 2012.… This spring, he will pace the Stockholm company’s revival of Fanciulla del West….
