In Thursday’s (5/8) Albany Times Union (N.Y.), Amy Biancolli writes, “After nearly two years without an executive director, the board of directors of the Albany Symphony Orchestra has hired Lawrence J. Fried, a longtime arts administrator who has served that same role for Opera in the Heights in Houston. Fried … fills a position that has been empty since August 2012, when Brian Ritter resigned after three years.… The new executive director said he was drawn to the position by the orchestra’s reputation for championing new American music, a mission led by conductor and music director David Alan Miller.… Fried’s salary will be comparable to Ritter’s, approaching $100,000, said ASO board chairwoman Marisa Eisenmann.” Prior to his Houston job Fried “spent five years as executive director of the Bellevue (Wash.) Philharmonic Orchestra … and served as artistic administrator and general manager of the San Antonio Symphony.… As a consultant for New York City, Fried created an arts and cultural tourism campaign for lower Manhattan.” Born in Manhattan, raised in New York’s Nassau County, and trained in music, Fried has performed as percussionist with the New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble, contributed articles to The New Grove Dictionary of American Music, and taught at CUNY College of Staten Island.
