The second season of the PBS series All-Star Orchestra will air beginning October 1, with four episodes featuring Gerard Schwarz conducting an orchestra made up of musicians from more than 20 U.S. orchestras. Repertoire will include the world premiere of Samuel Jones’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, with violinist Anne Akiko Meyers; Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben with Concertmaster David Kim as violin soloist and Principal Horn Erik Ralske; Copland’s Music for the Theatre; and Robert Beaser’s Ground 0. Pianist Lola Astanova is featured in the original jazz-band orchestration of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Episodes were filmed in August 2014 at the SUNY Purchase Performing Arts Center in Purchase, New York before a live audience. Each episode offers brief historical background about featured composers, as well as interviews and commentary by Schwarz.
