The American Academy of Arts and Letters has announced the winners of its 2012 awards in music, with a total of $190,000  in prize money awarded among eighteen composers: Niccolo Athens, Edmund Campion, Reena Esmail, Sean Friar, David Hertzberg, Huck Hodge, Takuma Itoh, Wang Jie, John Kander, Louis Karchin, Paul Moravec, Chris Rogerson, Haralabos Stafylakis, Christopher Theofanidis, Frank Ticheli, Xi Wang, Dan Welcher, and John Zorn. The winners were chosen by Academy members Ezra Laderman, David Del Tredici, John Harbison, Fred Lerdahl, Tania Leon, Bernard Rands, Gunther Schuller, and Steven Stucky. The Academy—founded in 1898 to foster interest in literature, music, and the fine arts—annually honors composers, artists, architects, and writers with cash awards ranging from $5,000 to $100,000.
