At its free Labor Day Weekend concert on August 31, Maryland’s Annapolis Symphony Orchestra will mark the 200th anniversary of “The Star-Spangled Banner” with a performance featuring Bethesda-based operatic tenor Rolando Sanz, winner of the Maryland State Arts Council’s Star-Spangled Sing-Off contest. Music Director José-Luis Novo, in his tenth season with the orchestra, will lead the concert at Quiet Waters Park, which will also include music from Richard Rodgers’s Victory At Sea and the USNA fight song “Anchors Aweigh.” Also on the program will be music by Sibelius, Shostakovich, Liszt, Duke Ellington, and John Philip Sousa, and Sanz will perform an aria from Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore. The ASO will conduct a Symphony Snapshot Photo Contest, inviting audience members to share concert photos and post them on the ASO’s Facebook page. Two winners will receive four tickets to one of the orchestra’s 2014-15 Classic or Family concerts.
